The Virginia Tech Massacre on April 16th certainly shocked the world. But maybe it was because that I had been busy preparing for exams, when I finally had time to search for further reports for it, I couldn't find many in Chinese. So I bought the latest issue of NEWSWEEK, which includes a series of special reports about this tragedy.

An article of the special reports, The Anatomy of Violence, talks about how come a person turns into a mass killer. Criminal violence is believed to be rooted in the biology and the psychology of an individual, and the larger culture. Scientists had believed that there might had been some kinds of genes which trigger aggressive behaviors , but they found that the gene alone could not fully explain why people had violent behaviors. Only in certain conditions are those who have such genes more likely to commit violent crimes than others.

However, the psychologies of mass murderers have much in common. They tend to be depressed, socially isolated, and paranoid. They believe the world is against them. "They see others as being responsible for their problems; it's never their fault."So the question is, where do these anger and resentment com from? It seems that a person's temperament influents how the world treats him, and therefore could strengthen the temperament.

This doesn't mean that latent killers are doomed to become active ones someday. With appropriate care and encouragements, an "odd" person can become as socially adept as other people. The problem is that we tend to keep ourselves away from "weird ones", in order to protect ourselves. There's nothing wrong about this way of thinking, but it is this thought that makes this society a cold and cruel one.

So what should we do? How should we act towards those who have totally different, even "dangerous" thinking patterns? Or on the other hand, how should we face ourseves when stress and depression seem to bring out some negative ideas? I think it's time for us to have a good think about it now.
